Friends of the EHC

STOP PRESS: OUR FIRST EVENTS OF 2025 ARE SCHEDULED! Scroll to the bottom of the page for details.

HELLO! This is the dedicated page for the Friends of the Edward Hain Centre. Previously known as the League of Friends of the former hospital, we are generally known as ‘The Friends.’

Our main activity is fundraising for the Centre. In 60 years of supporting the hospital, previous Friends groups funded many improvements for patients and staff, including a new X-ray machine and a Day Room.

Now, we organise a wide variety of events to raise funds and help the Centre with running costs and other specific needs.

We also organise a weekly community ‘Knit & Natter‘ group at the Centre. The photo shows a group of us presenting blankets made by the group for St. Julia’s Hospice in Hayle.

For a list of our upcoming events, please scroll down to the bottom of this page. We hope you will find some that appeal to you, and look forward to seeing you soon!

The Friends of the Edward Hain Centre

We are a registered charity, no. 225835. Previously known as the League of Friends of the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital, the Friends formed in the mid-1960s ‘to perpetuate the memory of Edward Hain and to assist in the provision of health and well-being services for the residents of St Ives.’ (From the Charities Aid website)

Raising Funds: Past & Future

During in 2022, the Friends launched a nonstop series of events to raise funds for the purchase of the Edward Hain building: from sponsored walks, luncheons, cream teas, auctions, shaking collection buckets at the St. Ives Shanty Shout, a ball at Tregenna Castle . . . you name it!

Together with a substantial amount raised by the Friends in previous years, a number of generous donations, and the support of local businesses, we were within sight of the £1 million purchase price.

To cover the shortfall, the Centre took out a mortgage of £400,000. At the end of July, 2023, the building was back in community hands at last.

The Friends are now partnered with the St. Ives Shanty Shout as their charity of choice, for which we, and the whole Edward Hain Centre organisation, are very grateful.

What we do now

We continue to organise a wide variety of fundraising events. Since the building’s purchase, however, our fundraising goals have shifted. We now support the Centre by helping with core running costs, including paying most of the monthly mortgage cost.
