Friends of the EHC

HELLO! This is the dedicated page for the Friends of the Edward Hain Centre, generally known as ‘The Friends.’

Our main activity is fundraising. In 60 years of supporting the hospital, we funded many improvements for patients and staff, including a new X-ray machine and a Day Room.

The Friends have always been committed to enhancing the health care of our community, as well as to perpetuating the name of Captain Edward Hain. So when the NHS closed the hospital and announced the building’s sale, the Friends decided to buy it and start a new Health & Wellbeing centre for St. Ives.

For more of the story, see ‘Raising Funds’ below.

We did it Day

The Friends of the Edward Hain Centre is a registered charity, no. 225835. Formerly the League of Friends of the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital, we were formed in the mid-1960s ‘to perpetuate the memory of Edward Hain and to assist in the provision of health and well-being services for the residents of St Ives.’

Raising Funds

Beginning in 2022, the Friends launched a series of events to raise funds for the purchase of the Edward Hain building. Together with a substantial amount raised by the Friends in previous years, a number of generous donations, and the support of local businesses, we were within sight of our goal.

To cover the shortfall, the Centre took out a mortgage of £400,000. The purchase was completed at the end of July, 2023.

So what next, now that the building is safeguarded for the community? Well, we are now at a whole new beginning, with a whole new set of fundraising goals . . .

For more, see ‘what we do now,’ below – and please check out our list of upcoming events at the bottom of the page!

What we do now

The rents taken in from service providers will go a long way to covering the Centre’s running expenses; but not all the way. With staff budgets to meet, renovations, and improvements to make, our targets are as ambitious as ever.

And yes, a big wish on our list is to start paying off that pesky mortgage!!!
