Friends of the EHC
HELLO! This is the dedicated page for the Friends of the Edward Hain Centre, generally known as ‘The Friends.’
Our main activity is fundraising. In 60 years of supporting the hospital, we funded many improvements for patients and staff, including a new X-ray machine and a Day Room. See more below under Raising Funds.

The Friends of the Edward Hain Centre
We are a registered charity, no. 225835. Formerly the League of Friends of the Edward Hain Memorial Hospital, we were formed in the mid-1960s ‘to perpetuate the memory of Edward Hain and to assist in the provision of health and well-being services for the residents of St Ives.’
Raising Funds
Beginning in 2022, the Friends launched a series of events to raise funds for the purchase of the Edward Hain building. Together with a substantial amount raised by the Friends in previous years, a number of generous donations, and the support of local businesses, we were within sight of our goal.
To cover the shortfall, the Centre took out a mortgage of £400,000. The purchase was completed at the end of July, 2023.
SO WHAT’S NEXT?
Our fundraising goals have shifted. We need to support the Centre with core running costs, renovation and upgrades, ongoing repairs, and generally bringing the building up to scratch. AND with paying off that mortgage!
For more, and how you can help, see ‘what we do now,’ below – and please check out our list of ongoing and future events at the bottom of the page.
What we do now
There is still a LOT to do at the Centre. A few rooms have been renovated, but most of the others still need a huge amount of TLC before they can be rented out.
Once they are, the Centre will be self-sustainable. But until then, we continue to help cover the Centre’s running expenses, staff costs, and contributing to improvements. So our targets are as ambitious as ever.
And yes, a big wish on our wish list is to start paying off that mortgage!!!
