From Big Dig to Big Build: Our Wellness Garden takes shape

Just a couple of weeks ago, our community came together for The Big Dig: a spirited volunteer day that breathed fresh energy into our long-neglected walled garden. Thanks to our volunteers, the once‑overgrown, uneven and cluttered garden has been completely cleared. This laid the essential groundwork for everything that comes next.

Today, we are thrilled to share the next chapter in this transformation: the Big Build! The creation of our new Wellness Walled Garden is now officially underway. (Click the pink link to read bout our plans for this, posted in February.)

During The Big Dig, our team of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and tackled years of overgrowth. They scraped, swept, levelled, and cleared, turning a daunting job into a day of teamwork and community pride.

Their hard work means that we can now move confidently into the next phase: professional construction and landscaping.

A big cheers to all who pitched in! You are the best.

The space is now in the skilled hands of Cormac, our contracted landscapers. They will lead the major structural work alongside Mark Wilson, our Caretaker & Maintenance Lead at the Edward Hain Centre. Supporting the “Big Build” design and planting will be Ben Jeffries, a landscape gardener. Together, this dedicated team is shaping the foundations of what will become a beautiful, accessible, outdoor sanctuary.

They will be defining pathways and seating areas, preparing planting beds, and installing features. Work began last week, and below you can see the beginnings of things to come…

The Big Build team’s combined expertise is already transforming the cleared foundations into a garden with purpose!

Our Wellness Walled Garden will soon become a thriving outdoor space. Visitors, volunteers, community groups and practitioners can benefit from a mindfulness and relaxation area. We can to deliver nature-based community sessions and outdoor workshops. There will be space for creative activities, gentle movement, yoga and wellbeing classes. It will become a quiet refuge between appointments.

It will be a vital extension of the Edward Hain Centre’s commitment to health, connection and community. And in just a few weeks, we will be celebrating its completion…
