EHC’s 3rd Birthday Open Day: a success despite mizzle!

Our third anniversary on Saturday, 19th September has come and gone – and, despite mizzle, resulted in us raising an amazing £674! A huge thank you to all who came to celebrate with us, and everyone who contributed to the event with cakes, raffle and tombola donations, and a good dose of enthusiasm.

As usual, the cakes were awesome (just see the photo above…) – the result of generous baking of our wonderful volunteer bakers, as well as donations from several local vendors. This event’s raffle prizes were especially sumptuous, too; and our two ‘taster sessions’ of new services also went down a treat (see thank-yous below).

We were delighted to welcome St Ives’ brand new mayor, Andrew Mitchell, at his first ‘official’ engagement at the EHC. His speech was encouraging and supportive of our achievements. We’re happy to report that his wife, who was taken ill during the event, has recovered and is doing well.

Coming to the Centre for the first time, we also welcomed the Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, Floyd Steadman, who was seen chatting to many different groups during the event. His speech was also impressive – as was his handshake: that of an ex-headmaster, as he proudly announced! He gave special mention to Samantha Peters, a tremendous asset to the centre who procured last year’s fabulous National Lottery Community Fund grant, and now heads a small grant fundraising group for us.

With many thanks to Fran Goldingay for all of the above photos

After speeches by the Mayor, Deputy Lieutenant and EHC Chair, Lynne Isaacs, trustee Claire Sutcliffe and EHC Director talked about this year’s upcoming Shanty Shout, including Shanty Kids.

Once the event was in full swing, the flow of foot traffic seemed constant. Visitors gathered in the front room for cakes, collected pizza from the kitchens, bought raffle tickets, and milled upstairs for ‘taster’ sessions and tombola.

Outside, Silvia Giannelli’s stall selling her home-made jewellery, macrame and crystals, was a popular stop (Silvia known by many for her meditation sessions she’s held at the EHC)…

It was lovely to see so many familiar faces!

Music throughout the event was provided by Spaven Mor – aka our own EHC Trustee, Claire Sutcliffe, and husband Kev. They were also joined in some rousing Shanties by Captain Scarlet, aka Sarah Hall. Sarah heads the Shanty Shout team and is helping Pilchard the Pirate round up the dozen or so Shanty Kids who are part of our joint project with them. (See this post…)

The occasion for all of this was, of course, a celebration of our 3rd birthday. Our volunteer co-ordinator, Claire Jefferies (who, sadly, was unable to be present) had baked a special cake for the occastion, and Claire, Kev and Sarah launched into some rousing shanties – including ‘Cornwall My Home’, which everyone joined in with.
